KEEPING IT REALReal people, real issues
Loneliness is a growing problem in our society.
A study by the American Council of Life Insurance reported that the most lonely group in America is college students. That’s surprising! Next on the list are divorced people, welfare recipients, single mothers, rural students, housewives, and the elderly.
To point out how lonely people can be, Charles Swindoll mentioned an ad in a Kansas newspaper. It read, “I will listen to you talk for 30 minutes without comment for $5.00.” Swindoll said, “Sounds like a hoax, doesn’t it? But the person was serious. Did anybody call? You bet. It wasn’t long before this individual was receiving 10 to 20 calls a day. The pain of loneliness was so sharp that some were willing to try anything for a half hour of companionship.”
Jesus is aware of your loneliness and he wants to bring us into a meaningful relationship with him.
Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” John 4:13-15
Jesus made a special trip to meet the woman at the well, to offer her something that the world could never give. This woman had been spending her life taking from the wells of this world only to find herself searching again.
It is possible to have relationships, but still be lonely.
She was actually surrounded by relationships, as a matter of fact Jesus pointed out that she had 5 husbands, with one on the back burner. I guess it was in case the other ones did not work out.
Jesus knows the deep emptiness in a heart that is void of him. He told her that the water he offers (speaking of himself ) would be something that would meet the deepest needs in her soul. What an offer. Obviously she was at a point in her life where she was tired of searching for the next thing. Her words were “SIR , give me this water, that I may not thirst”.
What about you? Are tired of having to come to the same well over and over again only to be disappointed or abandoned again?
Jesus is looking for you at the well, waiting for you to say I don’t want to thirst any longer. Give me the water that springs up into everlasting life!
Jesus has destroyed the power of sin and the devil at Calvary’s cross so you can be truly free in your heart. If you would take a moment and confess and repent of your sin and put your trust in Jesus Christ then you can start to experience God’s gift of salvation.
Say this prayer, “Dear heavenly Father I come to you in the name of Jesus Christ. I confess that I am a sinner. I ask that you would forgive me of my sins. I‘m ready to repent and put my trust In Jesus Christ. Thank you for having mercy on me a sinner. In Jesus name Amen.”
